Prose of a Happy Pet
...[cont'd from Issue #29] I wished there was some light back there; where ever they put me, it was darker than any type of darkness I encountered at the last place I was at when all the lights would go down and humans would leave. It was so bumpy too, my stomach felt uneasy. It seemed like forever before the door opened and light flooded in causing me to blink my eyes rapidly in succession. A very large human with broad shoulders and a deep voice picked up my 'home' I was in. I remember hoping that this human wouldn't drop me, it looked so far down to the ground. I didn't know humans came this large! To my surprise the giant put my 'home' down on the ground gently. After waiting for only a few minutes, a very soft spoken human came over and opened my 'house' up. I cautiously walked out, I hardly ever got taken from my 'home' when at the other place. I was brought over to a 'house' this time that I swear must've been for rich pets...it was the size of a mansion! The human mentioned something about how I should be more comfortable in this 'kennel' than that small 'cage'. I guess those were the names humans used for houses of different sizes. I remember staying in this new place for twice the amount of time I was at the other; the atmosphere here was a lot different than my old place. I was separated from the kittens here, only housed next to other dogs, and they all sang a melancholy symphony. Some told me that they were there since they were as small as me, now with graying hairs speckling their faces. I hoped I didn't stay there that long, I mean, it wasn't horrible there or anything, but I continuously heard others talking about going to 'sleep', but those they spoke about never came back. That scared me. One day a human peered into my cage and pointed at me, motioning at another human to come over. Two humans stood before me smiling and cooing at me. I wondered what they were doing or trying to say to me? After a minute or two, they left. I thought this was just any other day, however, they came back just before it was lights out. I remember those two humans taking me out of that mansion of a 'house' of mine and putting something around my neck so they could lead me on a rope of some sort. I sat for what seemed like hours as they conversed with other humans and wrote many things on paper. That night when I laid my head down to sleep, it wasn't on a concrete floor, or a towel strewn on a grate. That night when I laid my head down, I laid it down in the arms of my best friend. [The end. "The world was lush at one time. Filled with life and movement. Every living animal knew its place. Knew the balance of life was delicate. And the treasured that balance for longer than any of them could remember.
But like all things must, that changed. Some of the animals got greedy. They wanted to rule over all the others. This animal was man.
They changed their environment to suit their needs and ideals. They lost touch with their fellow animals. They enslaved them and each other. Man was vicious and nasty. Most of the other animals turned their backs on man or chose to use man for their own gain.
But the dogs saw fear in man and took pity. They vowed to stand by man and act as a protector against those who would harm them. Even though some men betrayed their trust, dogs stayed by man as they had vowed. Thus they were there when it all changed.
Dogs watched the first of men die by their own hands. And they were there when the last did.
Most animals, especially the large predators, had died with man or had their numbers so depleted they were no threat. The land was scared from man with very little green for prey to hide in. But dogs survived.
It was many years before there were large packs of them, but by then the world was a dog’s world. After a couple generations the dogs began to discover powers they had developed from the waste man left behind.
At first they did not use these powers, for they had deemed it evil, gradually they began to see this power as a gift. A gift for never leaving man, not when they were betrayed by man, not when man used them, not ever. It was just as much a gift as the elongated life spans they had been given by man when they were still together. But like all great powers it eventually began to corrupt."
Shade, I found this as a post you posted back in November on PCG. I'm not sure why it didn't get any response, as I thought it was great and I would honestly love to hear more. If you have written anything additionally to this, please let me know! Beautiful job!
Some Think of It to Be a Touchy Subject
...which is fine. I, however, am very open about my thoughts in regard to religion. I am curious for those of you who are comfortable and willing to share, what are you religious views? The topic here is what made me want to put this subject in the newsletter to think maybe more people will respond. It is interesting to hear all of the different beliefs and opinions of others. Religion/spirituality is such a diversely amazing subject, and one I believe to be an important one. Even if you do not have a religion at all, you are still defining who you are by what you do in everyday life such as rituals (non-religious rituals even), your morals, and spiritual traditions you may or may not uphold in your life an important (whether they be religious or not).
